Mobile POS solutions have long begun to embrace mobile communication devices like smartphones and tablets as their means of accessing the back end systems. Some vendors try to glue a service to a specific device make or even model, others won’t – and the latter are those with the best flexibility and greatest value. But how do you maintain the required levels of security to protect the scheme, the merchant and the consumers? And how do you provide more value in an innovative mobile POS system for an even smaller investment? Find out how Secocard brings all of this and even more to retailers.

The Challenge

Retail merchants are on the lookout for less costly and more flexible equipment for card reading and It has become commonplace to think of smartphones and tablets as the component that interacts with the network – the mobile network if you will – and a separate device to actually do the card reading and perform the transaction with the scheme, something that should not be executed on an off-the-shelf consumer device due to the risks involved: unbeknownst to the merchant, a smartphone or tablet could be infected with a trojan horse application and so be converted into a vicious machine to steal credit card data and user credentials and PIN codes.

The Solution

So an intelligent but extremely safe extra piece of hardware is what the retail merchant will welcome – more so if this tool has more benefits than just reading cards and handling the dialog with the scheme back end. It could – at the same token – support its owner at online banking transactions and with secure ways of communicating with her bank, with business partners, and if so required even with customers.

Cost is definitely an issue when selecting the ideal equipment for retail card reading and transaction performing. Credit card schemes and banks are well advised to add more value to this type of equipment for less cost. Secocard is the product of choice to fulfill both: Schemes and acquirers can now provide their merchants with something they can really value – and which lets them benefit from the full protection of a dedicated hardware solution nevertheless. Users of this type of mobile POS terminal can exchange their fancy smartphones and tablets practically every day at random – the POS device will remain the same and provide all the security: Not only perform protected mobile payment and card acceptance services, but also online banking transactions and, if needed, it can also shield the dialog between the shop and a bank or a business partner, even a shop client, effectively from eaves-dropping and tapping. No need to exchange the small and lightweight device which is not really bigger than a few credit cards stacked on one another if the merchant wants to add a new type of payment or credit card to her shop portfolio. Protection for all types of services is already loaded into Secocard’s firmware and can be updated in the field. Protocols and applications standardized alongside the requirements of e.g. the German credit industry have all been implemented beforehand in the small device which not only the merchant, but also her customers will begin to love from first use.
